Marigold Sugar Skull Hoodie

This design by Jet Martinez, in collaboration with Oaklandish’s studio, uses the Monarch butterfly as a symbol of a voyage across borders. In this case, borders between nations, and borders between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead.

Most importantly, the Monarch represents returns. Returns to a homeland and returns to communing with one's deceased relatives and loved ones.

The Cempasuchil, or marigold, is a beacon guiding souls back to their home altars. In this design, the Calavera (skull) reminds us of the belief that our departed loved ones never truly leave us but instead make their annual and eternal journey home for Dia de los Muertos.

For many of us, home is in more than one nation. The Monarch serves as a bridge and a reminder of the voyage away from home and returning home.

Proceeds support The Unity Council and its work to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.
