Article: Oakland is Proud with Del Phresh

Oaklandish storefront boarded up but mural Oakland is still proud is painted on the boards.

Oakland is Proud with Del Phresh

If there’s a bright side to boarded-up storefronts in downtown Oakland it’s street art. We wanted to support Oakland artists and small businesses and so decided to commission an art piece at our flagship downtown store.

We contacted the legendary Del Phresh, Oakland’s first Graffiti King and member of the TDK crew, a collective of local aerosol artists. Del was one of the first Oakland graffiti artists to expand his work to other Bay Area cities. His versatile style crushes it in the streets and his work was featured in the book Spray Can Art and appeared on a local TV show called Home Turf.

We were inspired for this commission, by Del Phresh’s iconic and eye-catching Oakland is Proud mural that was a staple on E12th for decades. This beloved city landmark was featured on an album cover of a local rap group called Capital Tax and shown on the television show Hangin' with Mr. Cooper.

On this project, Del was joined by Vogue and Kufue and supported with art supplies from 14th Street Supply,

We’re thrilled to resurrect the pride and spirit of the iconic Oakland Is Proud mural in an official Del Phresh X Oaklandish collaboration and to create yet another iconic celebration of Oakland pride.
