Article: Isha Rooted in One

Isha Rooted in One

Our new design, “Isha” is a call to action for women everywhere to fight for universal access to healthcare, reproductive rights, and bodily autonomy.

Isha means woman in Hebrew, and Bay Area OBGYN physician Dr. Eden Hen, created it to help connect Oakland’s healthcare providers to the communities they serve. Unbeknownst to her, this creative endeavor would come to symbolize so much more than she initially intended.

The logo was born from her commitment to serve her community but grew into a powerful emblem of unity and solidarity for women's rights to essential healthcare. This unexpected evolution arose from the degradation of women's reproductive rights in the United States during the aftermath of the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

The design emerged as a beacon of unity, highlighting the essential need for accessible and inclusive healthcare for all women. Its influence expanded beyond its geographic roots, resonating with women nationwide and worldwide when women's health and bodily autonomy came under new assaults in the United States.

At its core, the design embodies passion and advocacy for reproductive justice. It stands as a rallying cry for equality on multiple fronts, addressing not only gender but also racial and socioeconomic disparities. It’s a testament to the vital importance of people’s autonomy over their bodies and health choices.

It also is a constant reminder of the power women and their allies have when they come together to support one another. It represents a stance against the commodification of healthcare, particularly how access to essential services has become stratified along the lines of privilege.

The proceeds generated through the use of this design will benefit the National Network of Abortion Funds, an organization working to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortions and mitigate the inequalities exacerbated by the evolving American legal landscape.

In short, what began as a simple symbol of local dedication quickly became an emblem of national and international empowerment, unity, and advocacy. In this way, it encapsulates the journey of women, their rights, and their shared commitment to creating a future where healthcare is a fundamental human right, not a luxury.

We hope you wear the “Isha” tee with pride and that it ignites passion and encourages women everywhere to stand up for their right to make informed choices about their bodies and their reproductive health. We hope these tees provide a visual reminder that women's safety and well-being are irrevocably intertwined with that of every other human being. We hope it drives home the essential truth that safe universal access to healthcare, reproductive rights, and bodily autonomy are human rights.
