Food People (Are the Best People)
Oakland, CA-based photographer/storyteller Kristen Loken has created a tribute to California's food industry with her just-released new book, Food People (Are the Best People). Kristen created this book to document how those in the California food industry are coping and evolving during these unprecedented times. With Covid-19, social justice calls to reform, and the California wildfires creating new challenges for these chefs, restaurateurs, winemakers, and others, and Kristen has documented each with a portrait and their story of both loss and strength. "I was so inspired by these men and women and their generosity and drive. They have been fighting tooth and nail to keep their employees, make meals for first responders and shelters, and pivot their businesses to operate as take-out businesses," she explains. "The common thread with all of these profiles, perhaps, if that food is the great connector. When all else feels lost, food can heal and comfort like nothing else."
The book features 129 food/beverage industry pros, including Alice Waters, Charlie Palmer, Tanya Holland, and Michael Tusk. (Oakland luminaries Tanya Holland, Sarah Kirnon, Nelson German & Matt Horn are on the cover!) You will also note that Food People also reflects the diversity found in the food industry.
Food People is 100% woman-produced, and 15% of profits will be donated to No Kid Hungry. The book is published by Acorn Press, hardcover, 296 pages.
