Oaklandish is about a lot more than t-shirts. The work that we do with the community informs everything we do. Through our yearly Innovator grants, donations and partnerships, featured nonprofits of the month, and collaborative designs, we partner with organizations who are building a better Oakland and providing our youth with platforms to express themselves and change the status quo in productive ways.
Our community partner Youth Radio recently had their windows smashed during a late-night protest in downtown. If you are able, please donate to help them repair the damage to their building. Founded in 1992 during a period of heightened youth violence, Youth Radio was established as an outlet for Bay Area youth to process their experiences and provide an alternative perspective to the prevailing media dialogue. Headquartered in the heart of downtown Oakland, Youth Radio’s mission is to engage youth in work-based learning opportunities, creative expression, and health and academic support services, to prepare and position them as leaders and creators of their city’s revival.
Youth Radio partners 14 to 24 year-olds with industry leaders to produce the high quality journalism, transforming the lives of young people. Through hands-on work experience, support services, and a creative outlet Bay Area youth have the opportunity to tell stories and share their perspectives that may otherwise go untold.
Check out one of their recent stories, featured on NPR’s All Things Considered.
Oaklandish and Youth Radio have partnered on a collaborative t-shirt. All of the proceeds from the sale of these shirts will go to Youth Radio. You can pre-order this t-shirt until 12 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31st. Shirts will ship the week of August 5th.
