A couple months ago, the Fam 1st Family Foundation organized students from several OUSD schools to tour the Oaklandish warehouse and offices in Jack London. On those tours, we took the students on a journey of a design; from creation of an idea, sketching and creating an image, all the way to letting the students themselves print an image on a shirt of their own. After having such a great experience with these students, we are happy to name Fam 1st as our Nonprofit of the Month for April!
Founded by Oakland-born cousins and NFL super stars Josh Johnson and Marshawn Lynch, Fam 1st is working to empower Bay Area youth through tutoring, scholarships, athletics, events, and various workshops on real world skills. Both alums of Oakland Tech, Johnson and Lynch are like countless Oakland-natives– brought up by hard working parents who cultivated their sense of civic duty and inspired them to give back to the community. As the now infamous after-game interviews of Lynch suggest, Oakland, and Fam 1st are one of the Seahawk running back’s top priorities off the field. Johnson is no different. Serving as president, Johnson is an integral part in Fam 1st’s overall direction, as well as choosing the activities the foundation participates in.
From 12 – 4pm on Saturday, April 18th, representatives from Fam 1st will be at the Oaklandish Dimond store (3419 Fruitvale Ave.), sharing information on the foundation’s work, and how people can get involved. There will also be special guest appearances throughout the day, so be sure to follow @oaklandishhq on Instagram and @0aklandish on Twitter for updates!
