February First Friday: Locksmith with DJ True Justice & GQ

The new year’s hangover is long gone, we are well into 2016 and that means one thing here at Oaklandish: First Fridays with Dion Decibels are BACK! The event will be at Oaklandish’s downtown Oakland retail store (1444 Broadway) from 7-10pm on February 5th and is a free event for all ages!

We are proud to announce that our headliner for February Frist Friday is none other than Richmond, CA native Locksmith. Locksmith will be accompanied by DJ True Justice and opening act GQ.

Lock first came into national focus in 2003 when he appeared on MTV’s Freestyle Battle TV series, making it to the series’ final round. Locksmith, whose birth name is Davood Asgari, paired with rapper Left to form the group Frontline, gaining national attention after the Who R You and Now U Know albums, and reaching Billboard Independent Album rankings of #48 and #46, respectively.

Lock called it quits on battle rapping in 2010, embarking on a solo career and a focused path for his music. He dropped four mixtapes between 2010 and 2013, culminating with his first official album A Thousand Cuts released in 2014, shortly followed by his sophomore album Lofty Goals in 2015. Since then, Locksmith has been on various tours, including the Slap Frost Tour in 2015 and The Rapture Tour with Zion I, Kev Choice, and company.

In addition to Locksmith and DJ True Justice, we are happy to note that Oakland based MC GQ will be performing at our February First Friday as well. You might know GQ by his birth name Quentin Thomas. Quentin was a standout basketball star at Oakland Tech, playing alongside Leon Powe during their championship run. GQ earned himself a scholarship to play basketball for the national powerhouse University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he started and turned many heads.

With a hoop career that was cut short due to a kneee injury, GQ opted to follow his second love in live – music. While some saw him as a hooper with flow, GQ soon convinced non beilevers that he was just the opposite – a rapper who can ball. Since turning his focus to music, GQ has dropped several projects and made noise signing to JAMLA records and working alongside Locksmith and others with the collective TEAM BACKPACK. Oaklandish is happy that GQ could make it for First Friday, with himself alongside Locksmith we are in for a treat!

Oaklandish is really excited to have Locksmith, DJ True Justice and GQ as our First Friday acts for February, so make sure you come out and support!
