February First Friday at Oaklandish!

Oaklandish & Dion Decibels are happy to announce that Rocky Rivera, Ammbush, & MadLines will be spittin’ and spinnin’ during February’s First Friday on 2/6!  The 1st First Friday of 2015, will go down in our expanded Downtown Oakland store at 1444 Broadway from 7-10pm, and also feature drinks by Drake’s Brewing Co.

Rocky Rivera is an accomplished journalist-turned-emcee whose editorials appeared in XXL, The Source and Rolling Stone Magazine before she decided to perfect her own musical craft. She’s dropped four independent musical projects since 2008, Married to the Hustle Mixtape, her self-titled album, the POP KILLER MXTP, and Gangster of Love.  In the past, she’s opened up for diverse artists such as Zion-I, Macklemore, Blue Scholars, Pac Div and dead prez. Rocky continues to headline with her crew (DJ Roza & Irie Eyez) performing her signature blend of thought-provoking lyrics and bass-rattling beats.

Those paying attention to the Oakland hip hop scene should be familiar with the work of Ammbush. Over the years, the Oakland Faders beat-maker has produced for SWTBRDS label-mate, DaVinci, and fellow Town crew, Main Attrakionz, amongst others. Moving from beyond the boards and to the booth in 2013 for his debut free album, Ammbaataaand 2014’s follow-up, Digital Graffiti,  Ammbush has proved he has the lyrical ability and personality to take centre stage.  As a DJ, Ammbush can get very serious, and also very silly, but you never feel like he’s trying to be anybody other than himself.

A modern artist is made up of many components and Lyricist/Performer/Youth Advocate MADlines is no different. Holding an MFA in Poetry from Mills College is just the tip of the iceberg of intrigue that is MADlines. Using an arsenal of influences, including her Jamaican roots, West Coast cool upbringing and experiences teaching in the Bay Area, her music is made for every part of the soul. After honing her skills performing in Seattle’s music scene, she relocated to Oakland. Her encounters teaching at-risk youth in her new home in addition to past experiences in Seattle and South Africa shaped her musical direction. This evolution led her to become what very few artists in any genre can claim, which is not only a voice of change in her community, but an active agent of it as well. Her latest EP, Word Play, was released for free on her Soundcloud at the very end of 2014.
